Dino Destinations in Connecticut

In case you haven’t heard, there’s a new dinosaur exhibit at Mystic Aquarium: Jurassic Giants.

Here’s a brief description of the exhibit from Mystic Aquarium’s website:

“Encounter breathing, clawing, roaring dinos that come to life! Travel back in time to discover 12 animatronic dinosaurs as you trek through an indoor dino trail. Your heart won’t stop racing with the anticipation of what’s to come as dinosaurs lurk around every corner. As you learn from their past, you’ll discover how to help protect the future.”

Sounds pretty neat, right? I hope we get a chance to visit soon!

In the meantime though, the news of the new exhibit got me thinking about all the other places we’ve had close encounters of the prehistoric kind. So I thought it’d be fun to put together a quick list of some of our favorite places in (and around) CT where dinos still rule.

Dino Destinations in Connecticut

1.Dino Expedition at Lake Compounce in Bristol offers a path that loops around life size, moving, breathing, noise-making dinosaurs (through the use of state of the art animatronics), as well as a “fossil dig area.”  After your trip back in time, you can check out the dozens of present day amusement park rides 🙂

2. The exhibit center at Dinosaur State Park in Rocky Hill was built atop a famous dinosaur trackway featuring hundreds of real dinosaur footprints!

3. The Children’s Museum in West Hartford features an exhibit called Dinosaurs in Your Backyard, which offers hands-on activities like puzzles, games, a dino footprint stamping sandbox and more.

4. At The Dinosaur Place in Montville you’ll discover a 1.5 mile nature trail lined with 40 life size dinos, as well as other activities. Be sure to check out the NEW playscape and mini golf!

5. The Peabody Museum in New Haven boasts a world renowned paleontology collection including real dinosaur skeletons like those of Brontosaurus and Stegosaurus.

6. Though it’s not technically in CT, Edaville U.S.A. in Carver, MA is an easy day trip from our state and features the amazing Dino Land, a prehistoric-looking pathway featuring over 23 life size animatronic dinosaurs!

I hope this post inspires you to go on your own Jurassic journey this summer!
