Summer 2020: Pick Your Own Strawberries in Connecticut

It’s strawberry picking season in Connecticut and we wanted to let you know which locations are open right now! This season only lasts a few weeks, so get out there if you want to pick.

If you are new to fruit picking in Connecticut, the season always kicks off with strawberries in June and ends with apples in the fall. I like to use this handy calendar from Lyman Orchards to help me keep track of what is currently available.

Calendar from Lyman Orchards’ website, www.lymanorchards.com

This year there are some changes being made at the farm to ensure the health and safety of all visitors. Here are a few things to keep in mind:

  • Bring a mask for each member of your party
  • The farm will provide you with a picking container. Most are requiring pre-payment this year instead of paying by the pound.
  • You will be required to social distance during your visit and groups may be limited in size.
  • Be sure to bring water with you when picking. It can get hot out there!
  • Be sure to check the social media pages or call the farm before you head out. These crops can run out quickly so picking may not be available every day and times may change.

So let’s get to it! Check out these four Connecticut pick your own strawberry destinations open right now.

1. Rose’s Berry Farm in Glastonbury, Connecticut is now open for PYO strawberries! They are open daily while supplies last. Be sure to check their Facebook Page or call them at 860-657-3119 to confirm picking times and fruit availability as they do change. Bring a mask and they request that you practice social distancing while picking. You will pre-pay for your strawberries in the field with either cash or credit card. This location also has a farm stand where you can purchase already picked strawberries and lots of other delicious goodies! OAAM POST; Website; Facebook Page.  1200 Hebron Avenue, Glastonbury, Connecticut.

2. Scott’s Yankee Farmer in East Lyme, Connecticut at is a great shoreline destination for a PYO adventure. They are now open for PYO strawberries, however, due to Covid-19, they are only allowing picking by appointment. Don’t just show up there! Go to their website and purchase your picking tickets in advance. They only post picking times 1-2 days out so check back often to pick the best day and time for you and your family. Picking is limited to a party of 5 people and 25 minutes so plan accordingly. They also are requiring masks and want to ensure customers are social distancing. Check out all of their current requirements here.  OAAM POST; Website; Facebook Page. Call them at (860) 739-5209. 436 Boston Post Road, East Lyme, Connecticut.

3. Lyman Orchards in Middlefield, Connecticut is one of the state’s most well-known PYO destinations. They have started picking strawberries and will offer a lot of other fruit picking options throughout the summer and into fall. Picking is usually offered daily, but always check their Facebook page or call them at 860-349-6015 to get the current crop information. They are taking precautions due to Covid-19. They ask that visitors bring their own masks and will limit groups to 4 or less. They will also be providing containers for picking so you do not need to bring your own. Be sure to stop by the Apple Barrel Market for a meal or a treat before your head home! OAAM POST; Website; Facebook Page. 32 Reeds Gap Road, Middlefield, Connecticut.

4. Bishop’s Orchards in Guilford, Connecticut is officially open for PYO strawberries! They will be implementing new procedures due to Covid-19 including spacing groups out in the field and they ask that all visitors practice social distancing while there. Visitors will need to have a mask and they will be limiting the group size to 5 people. Fruit will be pre-sold by the container (provided by the orchard). Pricing is 1 quart for $7, 4 quarts for $25, and a flat for $48. Hours and days for picking may change so be sure to call their 24-hour hotline for the latest information. (203) 458-PICK (7425). And when you are done picking there is still plenty to do at Bishop’s Orchard. There is a farmer’s market, winery, ice cream stand, and more!  OAAM POST; Website, Facebook Page. 526 New England Road, Guilford, Connecticut.
