Cherry Picking at Belltown Hill Orchards

Please note: This post is from 2020. Be sure to check Belltown Hill Orchards’ website and Facebook page for info on the current picking season!

———————————–

If you think PYO strawberry season is short, just wait until you try to catch the cherries! In the world of fruit picking, I’m not sure it gets any more blink and you’ll miss it.

In fact, my family had never actually been cherry picking before (apparently we blink too much). But fortunately, on some chance advice from my neighbor, I started stalking Belltown Hill Orchard’s Facebook page for any news early this week, which is how I found out that their PYO cherries are ready!

So this morning we headed to Belltown Hill Orchards in Glastonbury for their PYO cherries.

Their Facebook page advised calling ahead just to make sure the picking was open, and it’s a good thing I did because in the course of that conversation I also learned that cherry picking at Belltown does not take place where all the other picking at Belltown does. Had I not asked, I would have totally ended up in the wrong location and probably come home with blueberries instead of cherries ๐Ÿ™‚

Cherries are picked up on Belltown Road, that’s the road almost right across from the entrance to Belltown’s main farm.

Whichever direction you come from Matson Hill Road, keep an eye out for Belltown Road, which is near the entrance to the main Belltown Hills farm. Cherry picking is up at the top of that hill. Source: Google Maps

The parking area for cherries is clearly marked. It’s just before you reach the driveway for Crystal Ridge Winery (which is another great destination! Though we’ll save that for a post about adult playdates. LOL)

The beautiful Crystal Ridge Winery! Save that one for an adults-only playdate ๐Ÿ˜‰

Once you park, just walk along the parking area until you get past the rows of cherry trees where there is a clearing. There are clearly marked ENTER and EXIT areas for the picking.

Bags are provided at the entrance.

Once you enter, you just pick! There are multiple kinds of cherries and you can pick whatever variety you want and mix them all up in the same bag (or not). The cherries were very easy to pick, even for my not-yet-3-year-old.

The cherries were so easy to pick; we quickly filled our bags.

10 pounds of cherries!
The spectacular view from the top of the hill–there’s Hartford!

What’s that they say about a bowl of cherries?

Hurry and get yours before the season passes you by! Because that would be, oh you know, the pits ๐Ÿ˜‰
