2021 Post:
Happy New Year, friends! After the last 10 months it sure feels good to have a fresh page on a calendar for a new year, even if we all intuitively recognize that progress will still come slowly.
Like many of you probably did, we rang in the new year at home. We had chocolate fondue with strawberries, marshmallows and the best poundcake I’ve ever tasted, introduced the kids to one of our favorite childhood movies, Honey, I Shrunk the Kids, and tried not to feel like dinosaurs when they exclaimed at such strange and museum-quality items as telephones with cords and remote controls the size of a laptop.
Despite the new calendar digits, we are still expecting things to be a little bit slow around here for a while. I mean, a blog about things to do outside of your home during a global pandemic is still not one of the most useful sources of information.
But we’ve been pretty proud of what we’ve been able to accomplish over the last year, first by helping readers stay connected to “the outside world” through virtual programming opportunities and later by offering responsible, socially distanced outing ideas to help give our kids some sense of normalcy.
That’s not to say it hasn’t been challenging. Whereas during “normal” times we are lucky enough to receive a steady stream of invitations from local venues, making it pretty straightforward to find new destinations to write about, this past year we’ve had to get a little creative in our search for new material.
Like the other day when I saw my neighbor’s Facebook post about her family’s visit to Holiday Lights Spectacular at Olde Mistick Village, and I immediately ambushed her with desperate text messages inquired if she might be okay with me sharing some of her photos with our readers. I may have held my breath until she said yes, which fortunately was very quickly (thanks, Kristy! You’re THE BEST!).

Holiday Lights Spectacular runs through January 2021. Here’s the description from the Olde Mistick Village website:
This holiday season – unlike any other – we crave family traditions and a return to normalcy. While we are months away from a post-pandemic recovery, Olde Mistick Village has created an old fashioned Holiday Light Spectacular for you and your family. In fact, this event will be the largest holiday lights display in southern New England!
Starting November 25th and through the month of January, Olde Mistick Village will be decorated with beautiful holiday lights throughout its entire campus of 40 shops and restaurants. Over a half million lights will showcase archways, trees, reindeer and elves! We have transformed Olde Mistick Village into a holiday wonderland, open every night, for the entire season.
Olde Mistick Village is your safe shopping and dining destination. Come explore our dog friendly, open air village. Face coverings are required and social distancing is maintained in our wide open campus of stores.

Kristy and her family had a wonderful time checking out all the lights and displays! And taking plenty of fun photos along the way.

They even got to do a little shopping and then wrapped up their visit with a stop at the nearby eatery Sift for some goodies.

The holidays might technically be over, but after all the ups and downs of 2020, we all deserve something to keep our spirits merry and bright for a few extra weeks 🙂
I hope you get a chance to see the lights at Olde Mistick Village with your loved ones too. We’ve put a lot of things on hold this past year. Let’s start making up for it with new family memories right now!

Just wanted to correct one thing! There’s a misspelled word in your article! Old mystic village was spelled wrong
Sorry my mistake it was spelled correctly! I should do my research before opening my mouth!! Living in ct all my life never saw mistick spelled that way!!
No worries, Lena! I actually did the same thing! I wrote the whole post with a “y” and then had to go back and change it 😉
