Having moved back to CT after living in Portland, Maine, for the past several years our family has been excited to traverse the state. We are big foodies and have heard a lot of chatter recently about people lining up on weekend mornings at a magical place in Granby for doughnuts, cinnamon rolls and egg sandwiches on freshly baked biscuits. So, we decided to explore…
Along the scenic Barn Door Hills Road in Granby sits Julien’s Farm Store, a small cafe next to the Valkyrie Equestrian Center, which has become a destination for breakfast and baked goods.
We have heard stories about the icing-topped cinnamon rolls, brownies, slices of chocolate and carrot cakes, coconut banana bread and whatever else Julian Tessier, a world-class chef and pastry maker was inspired to bake that week.
They are open Thursday through Sunday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. but only serve lunch on Thursdays and Fridays. FIRST COME FIRST SERVED! (and no dogs, please!)
We were also warned to arrive early as there’s often a substantial line outside the cafe on weekend mornings when Julien’s opens at 8 a.m.

For breakfast they serve egg and cheese sandwiches on gushed about biscuits, quiche, Croque Monsieur, and garden potatoes. For those with a sweet tooth they offer a variety of donuts (including Nutella filled), peanut butter chocolate cake, spicy applesauce ginger cake muffin, peanut butter frosted banana bread, and chocolate chip cookies.

“A reminder about the farm, and the property that we share with the horses: while horses are in pastures, it’s their time to be away from interaction with or stimulation from people, and we must respect that. They work very hard for us, and then they need time to themselves — and we’re so grateful that time is provided to them.We therefore ask that when visiting Julien’s, you admire them only from the garden or the views from the shop. Valkyrie is a separate business, and a private property, so for the welfare of all of the horses — and people! — please respect these two separate spaces.”
