Fall has always been my favorite season– the crisp air, the brilliant colors, the cozy apparel…the pumpkin spice everything 🙂
I’ve grown to love this season even more as I have spent time exploring the many family-friendly outings and activities that make this time of year extra special in Connecticut.

So today, I’m sharing the TOP 5 things I am looking forward to this fall. I hope my family favorites inspire you to get “out and about” with your family this season!

#1: Apple Picking (and apple treat baking!)
I love loading up on these tasty treats that my whole family enjoys eating (and that is not something I can say about most healthy foods!). We mostly visit our local orchards like Scott’s and Dondero here in Glastonbury, but we have also traveled further afield over the years to other favorite CT picking spots like Rogers Orchard in Southington, Easy Pickin’s Orchard in Enfield, Bishops Orchard in Guilford, and March Farm in Bethlehem.
2: Corn Mazes
Before I moved to Connecticut, I’d never even seen a corn maze! Now it just doesn’t feel like fall until we’ve wandered in, around and through a precisely clipped crop. You can find corn mazes of varying difficulty all across the state, but the most famous of all CT labyrinths might be the megamaze at Lyman Orchards in Middlefield.
3: Scarecrows
Strolling among the scarecrows on Main Street in Old Wethersfield has become one of my family’s favorite fall traditions. Sometimes we pair it with lunch at Village Pizza. Sometimes we enjoy coffee (for the grownups) at Heirloom Market. We always grab some scoops at Main Street Creamery (love their seasonal flavors!). When the kids were small we often followed up with a visit to nearby Mikey’s Place Playground. Mark your calendar: the scarecrows arrive October 1st.
4: Cider Doughnuts and Apple Fritters
Each fall the great state debate resumes: cider doughnuts or apple fritters. Which side do you take? I’m personally a fritter gal, but my kiddos go for the doughnuts. Of course, even then opinions diverge on who does them best. The only way to know for sure is to eat. them, all. Ready, go!
5: Fairs and Festivals
If you’re looking for a little bit of fall everything, look no further than the seasonal fairs and festivals that spring up each autumn. Whether they are one-weekend-only extravaganzas or multi-month gathering places, these CT signature events highlight all the fall things we love most, all in one place.
